The Steller's Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri) is the only crested jay found west of the Rocky Mountains, ranging from Alaska south to Central America through coniferous and mixed forests. It is the provincial bird of British Columbia and a familiar presence at feeders and campgrounds throughout the western mountains. Bold and inquisitive, it is known for its ability to mimic the calls of hawks, often convincingly enough to scatter other birds from a feeding area.
