The Smithsonian Institution Building, affectionately known as the Castle, is the iconic red sandstone centerpiece of the world's largest museum and research complex. Completed in 1855 and designed by architect James Renwick Jr. in a Norman Gothic style, the Castle was the first building of the Smithsonian Institution, established by Congress in 1846 following a bequest from British scientist James Smithson. Today it serves as the Smithsonian's information center and administrative hub, welcoming millions of visitors to the National Mall each year and symbolizing the institution's enduring mission of the increase and diffusion of knowledge.
