Kings Canyon National Park, established in 1940 in the southern Sierra Nevada of California and administered jointly with Sequoia National Park, shelters one of the deepest canyons in North America — Kings Canyon itself plunges more than 8,200 feet from summit to river, deeper than the Grand Canyon by some measures. Ancient giant sequoias, the largest living things on earth by volume, stand in groves of cathedral-like grandeur throughout the park. The John Muir Trail passes through its high country, threading past granite peaks, alpine lakes, and meadows of wildflowers that bloom brilliantly in the brief Sierra summer.
