Kobuk Valley National Park, established in 1980 above the Arctic Circle in northwestern Alaska, is one of the most remote and rarely visited parks in the country — a place where the Kobuk River winds through a broad valley flanked by the Baird and Waring Mountains, and where the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes rise 100 feet from the tundra floor in one of the Arctic’s most startling landscapes. Caribou have migrated through this valley for more than 12,500 years, following ancient routes that Indigenous Inupiaq people have depended upon for millennia. Mammoth and other Ice Age megafauna fossils have been found preserved in the permafrost here.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access. The titles included in our U.S. National ParkStamps™ Collection cover all of these designations.
