Pinnacles National Park, established in 2013 in the Gabilan Mountains of central California, protects the dramatic remnants of an ancient volcano that erupted 23 million years ago and has since been carried 195 miles northward along the San Andreas Fault from its point of origin. The resulting landscape of soaring rock spires, talus caves, and chaparral-covered slopes is unlike anything else in California. Pinnacles is one of the most important recovery sites for the California condor — the largest land bird in North America — and visitors frequently spot these magnificent birds with wingspans exceeding nine feet riding thermals above the crags.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
