The Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta) is the state bird of six U.S. states — Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, and Wyoming — the most of any bird whose range is primarily in the western United States. Found across grasslands and open fields from the Great Plains to the Pacific Coast, it is a year-round resident across much of its range, with northern populations moving south in winter. Its rich, flute-like song is one of the defining sounds of the American West and is distinct from the closely related Eastern Meadowlark.
