Lassen Volcanic National Park, established in 1916 in the southern Cascade Range of northern California, is one of the few places on earth where all four types of volcanoes — plug dome, shield, cinder cone, and composite — can be found in a single landscape. Lassen Peak, which erupted dramatically between 1914 and 1917 in the most recent volcanic episode in the contiguous United States before Mount St. Helens, dominates the park’s skyline at 10,457 feet. Boiling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and brilliantly colored hydrothermal pools bubble and hiss across the park’s otherworldly Bumpass Hell thermal area, a vivid reminder that the earth beneath is very much alive.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access. The titles included in our U.S. National ParkStamps™ Collection cover all of these designations.
