Capitol Reef National Park, established in 1971 in south-central Utah, follows the Waterpocket Fold — a nearly 100-mile long wrinkle in the earth’s crust created 65 million years ago — through one of the most colorful and geologically rich landscapes in the American West. Domes of white Navajo sandstone resembling the U.S. Capitol dome gave the park its name, while the word “reef” reflects the barrier these rock formations posed to early travelers. Ancient Fremont petroglyphs, a historic pioneer orchard still bearing fruit, and cathedral-like canyon walls make Capitol Reef one of Utah’s most intimate and rewarding parks.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access.
