Ellis Island National Monument, established in 1965 in New York Harbor, is the most powerful symbol of American immigration — the gateway through which more than 12 million people passed between 1892 and 1954, arriving from every corner of the world in search of freedom, opportunity, and a new life. The Great Hall, where immigrants waited anxiously to learn their fate, has been meticulously restored and now houses the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration. It is estimated that nearly 40% of all Americans today can trace their ancestry to someone who passed through these doors, making Ellis Island a monument to the nation itself.
