The Korean War Memorial, dedicated on July 27, 1995, honors the 5.8 million Americans who served during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953 — a conflict often called the Forgotten War. The memorial's centerpiece is a striking triangular field of 19 stainless steel statues depicting soldiers on patrol, their ponchos billowing as if caught in the wind. A black granite wall etched with the faces of over 2,500 service members, a Pool of Remembrance, and the inscription “Freedom Is Not Free” make this one of Washington's most moving tributes.
