Pearl Harbor National Memorial, established in 1962 on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, honors the 2,403 Americans who lost their lives in the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941 — the day that brought the United States into World War II. The USS Arizona Memorial, built over the sunken battleship where 1,177 crew members remain entombed, is one of the most solemn and moving sites in the nation. Oil still rises slowly from the wreck to the surface of the harbor — what visitors call “black tears” — a quiet, enduring reminder of the sacrifice that changed the course of history.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access. The titles included in our U.S. National ParkStamps™ Collection cover all of these designations.
