Redwood National Park, established in 1968 along the fog-shrouded northern coast of California and managed jointly with three California state parks, protects nearly 45% of all remaining old-growth coastal redwood forest — home to the tallest trees on earth, with some individuals soaring more than 380 feet into the perpetual coastal mist. These ancient giants, some more than 2,000 years old, create a forest of cathedral-like grandeur and profound silence. Roosevelt elk graze in the park’s fern-carpeted prairies, Pacific salmon run the cold clear rivers, and the rugged coastline offers some of the most dramatic scenery on the entire Pacific shore.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
