Voyageurs National Park, established in 1975 in the lake-studded wilderness of northern Minnesota along the Canadian border, is a water-based park accessible almost entirely by boat — a shimmering world of more than 500 islands, 900 miles of shoreline, and four large interconnected lakes that once formed the highway of the French-Canadian voyageurs who paddled these waters in birchbark canoes laden with beaver pelts in the 17th and 18th centuries. Loons call across mirror-still waters at dawn, wolves howl from the boreal forest at night, and the northern lights blaze overhead in winter with breathtaking frequency and brilliance.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access. The titles included in our U.S. National ParkStamps™ Collection cover all of these designations.
