Yellowstone National Park, established in 1872 as the first national park in the world, sits atop one of the largest active volcanic systems on earth — a supervolcano whose heat powers more than 10,000 hydrothermal features, including geysers, hot springs, mud pots, and fumaroles found nowhere else in such concentration on the planet. Old Faithful, erupting with remarkable regularity approximately every 90 minutes, has greeted visitors for more than 150 years. The park’s 2.2 million acres shelter the largest concentration of free-roaming wildlife in the contiguous United States, including bison, wolves, grizzly bears, and the only continuously wild bison herd in America.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
