Big Bend National Park, established in 1944 along the great curve of the Rio Grande in the remote Trans-Pecos region of Texas, encompasses over 800,000 acres of Chihuahuan Desert, rugged mountain ranges, and river canyons of breathtaking depth and drama. The Chisos Mountains rise unexpectedly from the desert floor, offering cool forests and sweeping views that stretch deep into Mexico. More species of birds have been recorded here than in any other national park, and the dark skies above Big Bend are among the least light-polluted in the lower 48 states — a stargazer’s paradise at the edge of the wild.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access. The titles included in our U.S. National ParkStamps™ Collection cover all of these designations.
