Channel Islands National Park, established in 1980 and encompassing five of the eight Channel Islands off the Southern California coast, has been called the “Galápagos of North America” for its extraordinary concentration of unique plant and animal species found nowhere else on earth. Isolated from the mainland for thousands of years, the islands evolved their own distinct wildlife — including the island fox, one of the world’s rarest carnivores. Kelp forests of breathtaking richness surround the islands, while sea caves, pristine beaches, and Chumash cultural sites reward the adventurous visitors who make the journey across the Santa Barbara Channel.
