The Washington Monument, the world's tallest obelisk at 555 feet, stands at the center of the National Mall as the most prominent tribute to George Washington, commander of the Continental Army and first President of the United States. Construction began in 1848 but was halted during the Civil War, resuming in 1876 and completing in 1884 — a fact visible in the subtle change of marble color partway up the shaft. An elevator carries visitors to an observation level offering breathtaking panoramic views of the capital and the surrounding region in every direction.
