Badlands National Park, established in 1978 in the stark and stunning landscape of southwestern South Dakota, encompasses 244,000 acres of dramatically eroded buttes, pinnacles, and spires rising from the mixed-grass prairie like the ruins of an ancient civilization. One of the world’s richest fossil beds lies within its layered rock, yielding the remains of ancient horses, three-toed rhinos, and saber-toothed cats. Bison, bighorn sheep, and black-footed ferrets — one of North America’s most endangered mammals — roam the rugged terrain today, making the Badlands a place where deep time and wild beauty converge.

U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.

All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access. The titles included in our U.S. National ParkStamps™ Collection cover all of these designations.
