The Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) is the state bird of seven U.S. states — Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia — more than any other species. The male's all-red plumage is unmistakable, while the female is a warm buff-brown with red accents. A year-round resident across the eastern and central United States, it has expanded its range northward over the past century and is one of the most frequent visitors to backyard feeders.
