Everglades National Park, established in 1947 at the southern tip of Florida, is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States and the only place on earth where alligators and American crocodiles coexist in the wild. This vast, slow-moving river of grass — a sheet of fresh water just inches deep flowing imperceptibly southward to Florida Bay — supports an astonishing diversity of life, including 36 threatened or protected species. Roseate spoonbills paint the sky pink at dusk, manatees drift through mangrove channels, and the haunting call of the limpkin echoes across sawgrass prairies stretching to the horizon.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access. The titles included in our U.S. National ParkStamps™ Collection cover all of these designations.
