Gates of the Arctic National Park, established in 1980 entirely above the Arctic Circle in the Brooks Range of northern Alaska, is the northernmost and one of the most remote national parks in the United States — a place with no roads, no trails, no visitor facilities, and no compromises with wilderness. Named by explorer Robert Marshall in the 1930s for two peaks he called Frigid Crags and Boreal Mountain, the park encompasses 8.4 million acres of tundra, glacial valleys, wild rivers, and jagged peaks. Caribou migrate through in vast herds, wolves follow, and the aurora blazes overhead in winter darkness.

U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.

All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access. The titles included in our U.S. National ParkStamps™ Collection cover all of these designations.
