Great Sand Dunes National Park, established in 2004 at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in southern Colorado, contains the tallest sand dunes in North America — some rising more than 750 feet above the San Luis Valley floor in a landscape so surreal it seems transplanted from another continent. The dunes were formed over thousands of years as winds carried sand from the valley floor and deposited it against the mountain wall. Medano Creek, a seasonal stream that flows along the dune base each spring, creates a beach-like experience at 8,000 feet elevation, delighting visitors of every age.
