Great Smoky Mountains National Park, established in 1934 straddling the border of North Carolina and Tennessee, is the most visited national park in the United States, welcoming more than 12 million visitors annually to its ancient, mist-shrouded peaks and valleys. The Smokies are among the oldest mountains on earth, their rounded summits blanketed in one of the most diverse temperate forests in the world — home to more tree species than all of northern Europe combined. Black bears, white-tailed deer, and synchronous fireflies inhabit this lush wilderness, while historic Appalachian homesteads and grist mills speak to the human story woven into these hills.

U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.

All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access. The titles included in our U.S. National ParkStamps™ Collection cover all of these designations.
