Haleakalā National Park, established in 1916 on the island of Maui, Hawaii, encompasses the massive shield volcano whose summit crater stretches seven miles across and 2,600 feet deep — a stark, otherworldly landscape of cinder cones, lava flows, and volcanic ash that inspired early astronauts to train here for the moon. At 10,023 feet, the summit offers one of the world’s most celebrated sunrise experiences, as the sun rises above a sea of clouds to illuminate a landscape of extraordinary silence and beauty. Below, the park’s Kīpahulu district shelters lush rainforest, cascading waterfalls, and the sacred pools of ʻOheʻo Gulch.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access. The titles included in our U.S. National ParkStamps™ Collection cover all of these designations.
