The Iris was adopted as the state flower of Tennessee in 1933, replacing the Passion Flower. Who knew the competition for state flower-ism was so tough. Passion Flower lovers were comforted in 1973 with the designation of "state wildflower"; and Iris designated the "state cultivated flower". These machinations actually required state legislation, and emerged again in 2012 when the Tennessee Coneflower was named a "second wildflower". In the end the Iris won out when Willa Waid Newman wrote "When It's Iris Time in Tennessee", designated in 1935 as an official state song of Tennessee. In 2026 there are ten!
