Isle Royale National Park, established in 1940 in the remote northwestern corner of Lake Superior, is one of the least visited and most wilderness-immersive parks in the country — a roadless archipelago of 450 islands accessible only by ferry or floatplane, where the only way to explore is on foot or by canoe. The island’s isolated wolf and moose populations have been the subject of the longest continuous predator-prey study in the world, running since 1958. Ancient copper mines worked by Indigenous peoples thousands of years ago, pristine inland lakes, and boreal forest trails make Isle Royale a true wilderness sanctuary.

U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.

All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access. The titles included in our U.S. National ParkStamps™ Collection cover all of these designations.
