The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, dedicated on August 22, 2011, is the first on the National Mall to honor an African American and the first to honor a civilian rather than a president or war veteran. Situated on a four-acre site along the Tidal Basin, the memorial features the striking Stone of Hope — a 30-foot granite sculpture of Dr. King emerging from a mountain of despair. Fourteen of his most powerful quotes are inscribed along the curved granite Inscription Wall, ensuring his words of justice, equality, and hope endure for generations.
