The Monarch (Danaus plexippus) is native to North America and is best known for its annual migration between Canada and the overwintering grounds in central Mexico — a journey of up to 3,000 miles. It is the official state insect of seven U.S. states and the national insect of Canada. Its orange and black wings signal toxicity to predators, a defense derived from milkweed consumed during its larval stage.
