Mount Rainier National Park, established in 1899 in the Cascade Range of Washington State, is dominated by the massive, glacier-cloaked stratovolcano that gives the park its name — at 14,411 feet the highest peak in the Cascades and one of the most potentially hazardous volcanoes in the world, its summit perpetually wreathed in cloud and ice. Twenty-six named glaciers radiate from its summit, the largest glacial system on any single mountain in the contiguous United States. In summer, the subalpine meadows of Paradise and Sunrise explode in one of the most spectacular wildflower displays in North America, drawing visitors from around the world.
