Grand Coulee Dam, completed in 1942 on the Columbia River in eastern Washington State, is one of the greatest engineering achievements in American history — at the time of its construction, the largest concrete structure ever built. Stretching nearly a mile across the Columbia and rising 550 feet above the riverbed, the dam transformed the arid Columbia Basin into productive farmland through one of the most ambitious irrigation projects ever undertaken, while generating enough hydroelectric power to light the Pacific Northwest. The dam’s nightly laser light show, projected across its massive face each summer, draws visitors from around the world.
