Mount Rushmore National Memorial, established in 1925 in the Black Hills of South Dakota, features the 60-foot granite faces of four American presidents — George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln — carved by sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his son Lincoln between 1927 and 1941. The memorial was conceived as a tribute to the birth, growth, preservation, and development of the United States, with each president chosen to represent a defining era of the nation’s story. The surrounding Black Hills, sacred to the Lakota Sioux, provide a dramatic backdrop of ponderosa pine forests and granite spires for this iconic American landmark.
