North Cascades National Park, established in 1968 in the rugged northern reaches of the Cascade Range in Washington State, is one of the most dramatically alpine and least visited parks in the contiguous United States — a wilderness of jagged peaks, more than 300 glaciers, and deep river valleys so remote and challenging that vast sections remain essentially unexplored. Called the “American Alps” by mountaineers, the North Cascades harbor the greatest concentration of glaciers outside Alaska in the United States. Old-growth forests of Douglas fir and western red cedar fill the valleys, while mountain goats and grizzly bears roam the high country above.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access. The titles included in our U.S. National ParkStamps™ Collection cover all of these designations.
