Petrified Forest National Park, established in 1962 in the high desert of northeastern Arizona, protects one of the largest and most colorful concentrations of petrified wood in the world — ancient logs of Triassic-era trees, buried by volcanic ash 225 million years ago and slowly replaced molecule by molecule with brilliant quartz crystals in every color of the spectrum. The park also encompasses a significant portion of the Painted Desert, whose banded badlands of lavender, red, and ochre glow with extraordinary intensity at sunrise and sunset. Ancestral Puebloan petroglyphs and pueblo ruins add layers of human history to this ancient landscape.
