Route 66, designated a National Historic Corridor, is the most legendary road in America — the “Mother Road” that John Steinbeck immortalized in The Grapes of Wrath, stretching 2,448 miles from Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive to the Santa Monica Pier on the Pacific Ocean. Commissioned in 1926, Route 66 carried Depression-era migrants westward, fueled the postwar American love affair with the open road, and gave birth to the roadside culture of diners, motor courts, and neon signs that defined mid-century America. Today its surviving stretches through eight states preserve a living museum of American optimism, wanderlust, and the freedom of the highway.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access. The titles included in our U.S. National ParkStamps™ Collection cover all of these designations.
