Shirley Anita Chisholm born in New York, in 1924, was a politician, teacher, and author. Shirley was the first African American woman in Congress, and the first woman and African American to seek nomination for president of the United States. Her motto and autobiography Unbought and Unbossed, demonstrates her advocacy for women and minorities during her seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously in 2015.
