The Supreme Court of the United States, the highest court in the nation, has occupied its magnificent marble building on Capitol Hill since 1935. Designed by architect Cass Gilbert in a classical Corinthian style, the building's grand facade bears the iconic inscription “Equal Justice Under Law.” Established by Article III of the Constitution in 1789, the Court is composed of nine justices appointed for life by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Its landmark decisions have shaped the course of American law, civil rights, and democracy for more than two centuries.
