The Violet-green Swallow (Tachycineta thalassina) breeds across western North America from Alaska to central Mexico, favoring open country near cliffs, forests, and suburban areas where it nests in tree cavities and nest boxes. Its iridescent green back and violet rump are visible in good light, making it one of the more colorful members of the swallow family. It is a long-distance migrant, wintering from Mexico to Central America, and is among the earlier swallows to return north each spring.
