Zion National Park, established in 1919 in the canyon country of southwestern Utah, is a landscape of soaring sandstone walls, hanging gardens, and the emerald ribbon of the Virgin River cutting through Zion Canyon in colors so vivid and forms so dramatic that early Mormon settlers believed they had found a sacred place. The Angels Landing trail, ascending a narrow sandstone fin with sheer 1,500-foot drops on either side, is one of the most thrilling hikes in America. The Narrows, where hikers wade upstream through a slot canyon barely wide enough to touch both walls, offers an experience of the earth’s geology that is utterly unforgettable.
