The American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis) is the state bird of Iowa, New Jersey, and Washington. Found across most of North America, it breeds in the northern United States and southern Canada and winters across the southern states and into Mexico. Unlike most songbirds, it molts twice a year — males shift from bright yellow in summer to an olive-brown in winter. It is one of the strictest vegetarians among North American birds, feeding almost exclusively on seeds throughout the year.
