The Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) is the only hummingbird that breeds in eastern North America, ranging from southern Canada to the Gulf Coast. Each autumn it undertakes a remarkable non-stop crossing of the Gulf of Mexico — up to 500 miles — to reach its wintering grounds in Central America. Weighing less than a nickel, it beats its wings approximately 53 times per second and can fly both forward and backward with equal precision.
