The Belted Kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon) is found across North America from Alaska to Panama, typically along rivers, lakes, and coastlines where clear water allows it to spot fish from above. It is the national bird of Guatemala, where it is known along Pacific and Caribbean lowland waterways. One of the few North American species in which the female is more colorful than the male, she displays a rufous belly band that the male lacks.
