Biscayne National Park, established in 1980 just south of Miami, is one of the most unusual parks in America — 95% water, protecting a rare and fragile mosaic of mangrove shoreline, the northernmost Florida Keys, and a spectacular living coral reef system teeming with tropical marine life. Beneath the surface of Biscayne Bay, sea turtles glide past brain coral formations, parrotfish dart through elkhorn coral gardens, and the wrecks of historic ships rest quietly on the sandy bottom. Above the waterline, the park offers a tranquil escape from the urban energy of South Florida just miles away.
