Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, established in 1999 in western Colorado, protects one of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring gorges in North America — a chasm so deep, narrow, and sheer that some sections receive less than 33 minutes of sunlight per day. The Gunnison River has carved through some of the oldest exposed rock on the continent over two million years, creating walls that plunge nearly 2,800 feet in places. Painted Wall, Colorado’s tallest cliff face at 2,250 feet, rises in stripes of ancient pegmatite that glow pink and white against the dark canyon walls.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access. The titles included in our U.S. National ParkStamps™ Collection cover all of these designations.
