Mammoth Cave National Park, established in 1941 in the rolling karst hills of central Kentucky, protects the longest known cave system in the world — more than 420 miles of explored passages winding through ancient limestone beneath the Green River valley, with new passages still being discovered. Indigenous peoples explored these caves more than 4,000 years ago, and 19th-century saltpeter miners left their marks deep in the darkness. Above ground, the park’s forests, rivers, and sinkholes shelter a rich diversity of wildlife, while below, rare eyeless fish and cave crickets inhabit an underground ecosystem of extraordinary fragility and wonder.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
