Mark Twain House in Hartford, Connecticut, is one of America’s most beloved literary landmarks — the exuberant Victorian Gothic mansion where Samuel Langhorne Clemens lived with his family from 1874 to 1891, the years during which he wrote his greatest works, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. Designed by architect Edward Tuckerman Potter, the house reflects Twain’s wit, ambition, and love of the theatrical in every detail, from its whimsical roofline to the magnificent library where he read aloud to his daughters each evening by firelight.
