Sitka National Historical Park, established in 1910 as the oldest national park in Alaska, commemorates the site of the 1804 Battle of Sitka — the last major armed resistance of the Tlingit people against Russian colonial expansion — in a landscape of extraordinary beauty on the coast of Baranof Island in southeastern Alaska. Totem poles of remarkable artistry line the forest trails, standing among towering Sitka spruce in a setting that feels both ancient and alive. The park’s Russian Bishop’s House, one of the oldest surviving Russian-era structures in North America, speaks to the layered colonial history of this remarkable corner of Alaska.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access. The titles included in our U.S. National ParkStamps™ Collection cover all of these designations.
