Theodore Roosevelt Dam, completed in 1911 on the Salt River in the Tonto Basin of central Arizona, was the first major reclamation project of the United States Bureau of Reclamation and the largest masonry dam in the world at the time of its construction. Named for President Theodore Roosevelt, who dedicated the dam in 1911, it created Roosevelt Lake — the largest lake in Arizona — transforming the arid Salt River Valley into the agricultural and urban heartland that would become metropolitan Phoenix. The dam stands as a monument to the vision of water reclamation that made life in the desert Southwest possible.
U.S. national parks are frequently referred to as America’s Best Idea. Other common nicknames highlighting their value include National Treasures, Jewels in the Crown and collectively as the Natural Heritage or Crown Jewels of the nation.
All "parks" are not the same, with over 25 different designations beyond just "National Park". These include National Monuments, Historic Sites, National Recreation Areas, National Lakeshores/Seashores, and National Preserves, focusing on natural preservation, historical preservation, and recreational water access. The titles included in our U.S. National ParkStamps™ Collection cover all of these designations.
