Devils Tower National Monument, established in 1906 as the first national monument in the United States, rises 867 feet above the Belle Fourche River in the Black Hills region of northeastern Wyoming — a monolithic column of igneous rock whose fluted vertical sides have fascinated scientists, climbers, and visitors for generations. Sacred to more than 20 Native American tribes who know it by names including Bear Lodge, Grey Horn Butte, and Tree Rock, Devils Tower holds deep spiritual significance that predates European contact by thousands of years. At dawn and dusk, prairie falcons circle its summit in the golden light.
