The White House, the official residence and workplace of every United States President since John Adams in 1800, is one of the most recognized and storied buildings in the world. Designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban and constructed between 1792 and 1800, the neoclassical mansion at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue contains 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, and 6 floors, set within 18 acres of manicured grounds. Burned by British forces in 1814 and rebuilt, the White House has witnessed the most consequential decisions in American history and remains the living symbol of the presidency.
