White Sands National Park, established in 2019 in the Tularosa Basin of southern New Mexico, protects the world’s largest gypsum dunefield — 275 square miles of dazzling white sand dunes that shift and ripple across the high desert floor like a frozen ocean of pure light. Unlike quartz sand, gypsum does not absorb heat, making the dunes cool to the touch even under the blazing New Mexico sun. Rare species adapted to this extreme environment — including the bleached earless lizard, nearly invisible against the white sand — inhabit the dunefield, while the surrounding Sacramento and San Andres Mountains frame the landscape in dramatic relief.
